Making space cake

Making Space Cake: Everything You Need to Know About Weed Baking (2026 update)
Space cake (or weed cake) is still one of the most popular ways to consume cannabis without smoking. That is why many people choose it, as it provides a different, often stronger and longer-lasting high than a joint. However, it is also easier to overdo it – which is why we explain everything: from decarboxylation to dosage, effects, and safety.
Whether you are a beginner or already have experience: read this carefully before you bake!
What exactly is space cake?
Spacecake is simply a baked good (such as cake, brownie, or cookie) containing cannabis. Usually, you use weed or hash, which you first convert into cannabis butter or oil. Subsequently, the THC (the substance that gets you high) is processed by your stomach and liver, not through your lungs.
Important difference compared to smoking:
- Effects come on more slowly (30 min to 2 hours) because the THC must first pass through your liver.
- They last much longer (6–8 hours or more).
- Moreover, they often feel more intense and “physical” (due to conversion into 11-hydroxy-THC).
This makes edibles perfect for relaxing at home, but risky if you take too much.
How to make space cake? Step-by-step recipe (for beginners)
This basic recipe is for a cake of approximately 8–12 servings. Adjust the weed based on your experience!
Ingredients:
- 10–15 grams of good weed (beginners: max 10 grams, dose lower for strong strains)
- 200 grams of butter (or plant-based butter for vegans)
- 200 grams of sugar
- 200 grams of flour
- 4 eggs
- 1 tsp baking powder
- Optional: chocolate, nuts, vanilla, cocoa for flavor
Steps:
- Decarboxylate (super important!) First, preheat the oven to 110–120°C. Next, crumble the weed onto parchment paper. Then bake it for 30–45 minutes. This activates the THC – without it, it barely works.
- Making weed butter Melt the butter in a pan over low heat. Then add the decarboxylated weed. Next, let the mixture simmer gently for 2–3 hours (do not boil!). Stir occasionally, otherwise THC will be lost.
- Strain the butter. Then pour it through a sieve or cheesecloth to remove plant residue. Next, let it cool down. Now you have strong weed butter.
- Baking the cake: Mix the cannabis butter with sugar and eggs. Then add the flour and baking powder. Next, stir in the extra flavorings. Pour the mixture into a greased pan. Bake for 30–40 minutes at 180°C. Finally, let it cool completely.
Tip: Cut into 8–12 equal pieces. Additionally, store it in the refrigerator – it keeps for weeks.
Dosage: Start low, go slow!
This is where most people make mistakes. Edibles are unpredictable, which is why we recommend starting low.
Recommended starting dose (2026 guidelines NL):
- Beginners: 5–10 mg THC per serving (often 1/8–1/4 piece of cake).
- Advanced: 10–20 mg.
- Strongly experienced: 20+ mg.
How do you calculate THC in your cake? For example: if your weed has 20% THC, 10 grams of weed yields 2000 mg of THC in total. For 10 servings, that is approximately 200 mg per piece. However, you lose 20–30% during baking, so realistically it is 140–160 mg. In short: slice thinner if you are a beginner!
Therefore, always wait at least 90–120 minutes before taking more. Drink water, eat something fatty beforehand – that also softens the peak.
Effects of space cake: what can you expect?
- Onset: Slow, sometimes creeping. First a slight buzz, then waves.
- Peak: Highly relaxing, euphoric, sometimes trippy. Body heavy, head clear or not.
- Duration: 4–10 hours, with aftermath (fatigue, hunger).
- Difference compared to smoking: Less coughing, but a higher risk of paranoia/anxiety with too high a dose.
Positive: no smoke damage to lungs, discreet, long-lasting effect. Negative: easier to overdose → nausea, panic, “couch-lock”.
Safety tips: avoid a bad trip
Although the high lasts a long time, always start with a small piece (1/4 portion). Then wait 2 hours – do not eat more! Furthermore, stay at home with trusted people. Do not mix alcohol (that intensifies the effects). Finally, hydrating + snacking helps. In case of panic: stay calm, breathe deeply, eat sugar (sometimes helps). In short: be patient and stay safe!
In the Netherlands/Belgium: edibles are legal via smartshops/online, but the dosage is never exact on street products.
